The Miami Dolphins Can Now go BPA in the 2023 NFL Draft

Conservative Free Agency Allows Dolphins freedom to go BPA in Draft

The Miami Dolphins shook up the league when they landed DB Jalen Ramsey via trade with the Los Angeles Rams before the start of Free Agency. The move signaled that Miami was not going to run it back with a defense that ranked 18^th in the league last season and cost Josh Boyer his job. Many speculated this move meant the Dolphins were going to go on another spending spree and make more splashes than you would see at Sea World but to the surprise of many, the Dolphins have done quite the opposite.

Dolphins Backup Plans

Instead of trading for Lamar Jackson or signing Baker Mayfield to challenge starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, they signed former New York Jet Mike White to a modest deal to compete with 2nd-year player Skylar Thompson for the backup role behind QB1. Instead of signing LaVonte David or breaking the bank on Bills Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, they signed former Titan David Long on a bargain and brought back Duke Riley. Many pounded the table for the Dolphins to address the running back position and trade for either Vikings star Dalvin Cook or Titans star Derrick Henry, Miami explored the idea but decided to resign their entire running back room to more bargain deals instead.

The offensive line seemed destined for upgrades after ranking 24^th last year but GM Chris Grier announced during the combine that he was comfortable with the line as is and proved that with no expensive investments but minor ones in interior lineman Dan Feeney, and tackles Kendall Lamm and Geron Christian. They added depth to the Tight End room, signing former Bronco Eric Saubert as well as the secondary – bringing back Nik Needham and signing former Lion safety Deshon Elliot. They’ve also added former Jets wide receiver and return man Braxton Berrios on Thursday.

More Options at the 2023 NFL Draft Now

None of these moves minus Jalen Ramsey and David Long may make you jump from your couch with excitement, but this sets Miami up nicely for the upcoming NFL Draft in April. Now, the Dolphins do not have to go into the draft focused on filling any particular need. They can now focus on Best Player Available at 51, rather that be a falling star prospect who no one thought would be there (TE Darnell Washington perhaps?) or another luxury pick (HB Zach Charbonnet?) who the Dolphins would have to pass up to fill a need for a less desired player. They also have the ability to trade down or trade the pick for a veteran player that teams may dangle on draft night such as Vikings running back Dalvin Cook (yes, I think Miami is still very much in play).

Sure, are there players I wished Miami would have signed… of course! But I am encouraged with Miami’s strategy so far and what it could mean for the team come April 27^th.
