Miami Dolphins Freeing Up Money and Tua 5th Option

It might be the offseason but the Miami Dolphins have been busy the last few days. They decided to pick up the 5th year option on QB Tua Tagovailoa. They also freed up a lot of cap space by restructuring some of the larger contracts. While writing this article, it was reported that the Rams have worked out a deal to send Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins for a 3rd round pick (Pick #77) and Hunter Long.

Let the Money Flow!

Money Man Ross

Stephen Ross gets a lot of heat from some of the fans of the Dolphins but he deserves credit for doing whatever it takes to win. Miami signed Bradly Chubb, Terron Armstead, and Tyreek Hill to huge deals just last year. To a lot of NFL owners that would be enough. But, when goes GM Chris Grier goes to Ross and asks for even more upfront cash for those players Ross gives him a blank check.

The Dolphins freed up approximately $29 million in cap space by restructuring the contracts of Chubb, Armstead, and Hill. They will have additional money freed up after June 1st due to releasing Byron Jones with a post-June 1st designation. Miami is also bringing back RB Savon Ahmed after inking him to a 1-year deal for the 2023 season that can reach up to $1.8 million if incentives are met. I first saw this report from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Free Agency is Upon Us!

As a Miami Dolphins fan, I hate the word tampering (You know why!) but the so-called “legal tampering” window opens tomorrow (03/13/2023) at noon (EST) tomorrow. Deals cannot become official until the actual start of the new NFL year which opens on March 15, 2023, at 4 PM (EST). In the past, many leaks come out during the legal tampering period. So, I expect some leaks this year as well. Will the Dolphins make a splashy move that leads to a leak tomorrow?

Like many of you reading this, I do not have any connections inside the Dolphins organization so I have no clue of their leanings on how to attack the 2023 Free Agency period. With that said, I went around to have sites that focus on Miami to get a good feel on players that Dolfans are hoping to see wearing aqua and orange when the 2023 NFL season kicks off. Only backup QBs discuss here for now. The Ramsey trade has altered the available cap space, so I will have to do more research.

FA Backup QB Fan Favorites:

  1. Taylor Heinicke
  2. Gardner Minshew
  3. Carson Wentz
  4. Teddy Bridgewater (Bringing him back)
  5. Cooper Rush
  6. Andy Dalton
  7. Marcus Mariota
  8. Mike White
  9. Sam Darnold

Dolphins Thirsty thoughts on Backup QB: I feel that Heinicke or Minshew would be good fits for the Dolphins. They both have played well when given the chance. I would be happy with any one of them in hopes that we would not have to see him play any meaningful football in 2023 as Tua Tagovailoa stays healthy.
