Would Tua Beat Out
The general manager, Chris Grier, of the Miami Dolphins said on record that Tua Tagovailoa will be the starter in 2023. Would Tua easily beat out some of the names mentioned in this blog? If the QB spot was an open competition? I’m not talking about the huge names that get thrown around Twitter. If the team made big trades to bring in Lamar Jackson, or Aaron Rodgers of course those moves are only made to bring in a new starter. The same applies to signing Tom Brady, he is only signing to start with a team. If Brady does not retire that is of course.

Derek Carr
Would Tua beat out Derek Carr? If the Las Vegas Raiders release Carr due to no trade partners then he is on the open market. If Carr signed with Miami would he be able to beat Tua out if given a fair chance?
Carr has the edge in durability. Aside from missing one game in 2015 and one game in 2016, Carr has been consistently available to play. He was benched for two games in the 2022 season. Otherwise, Carr has been ready to go. Tua has a history of not playing full seasons. Even in college, Tua had problems staying on the field.
When healthy Tua stands up strong in the stats area. Carr has a career quarterback rating of 91.8 compared to Tua’s 95.0.

Carr has been voted into the Pro Bowl three times. Yes, that is a popularity contest but it shows he played well enough to get people’s attention. Carr’s best season was in 2016 when he led the Raiders to playoffs. Tua’s best season was this season (2022).

Carr has had some solid seasons in the NFL. Tua has shown promise when he is healthy.
Edge:
Tua comes out on top of this matchup. It is not by wide a gap due mainly to the injury concerns of Tua. But, if both players are healthy over the course of the season, I feel that Tagovailoa gives the Dolphins the best to be a winning team.
Would Tua Beat…
Would Jimmy Garoppolo beat out Tua in an open competition? Unlike Carr, Garoppolo does not have a major edge over Tua in the durability department. Garoppolo also missed extended action over the course of his career. He was injured in the Miami game this season and has not returned.
Garoppolo does have a Super Bowl appearance on his resume. Like Tua, Garoppolo seems to find ways to lead his team to victory. Both of them are viewed as not having cannons for arms. Yet, they find a way to make needed throws to keep the chains moving. Garoppolo has played on a team with Mike McDaniel on the staff so he might come in with a knowledge of the complex system.

I feel that this one would be a very close battle if both were given the chance to earn the QB1 spot on the Miami Dolphins. Yet, I feel that Tua would come out on top based mainly on the signs of improvement he showed when healthy this year. He showed that in this quick-throw offense that he can thrive when given the right weapons.
Baker Mayfield
Baker Mayfield was the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns selected him over Josh Allen. So he does have some pedigree. However, by the end of the 2022 season, Mayfield had already played for three NFL teams. He was bumped out of Cleveland and the Carolina Panthers. Yes, Cleveland made the decision to make the big trade for Deshaun Watson but was that decision made for the on-field performance or behind-the-scenes drama?
The Panthers also quickly moved away from Mayfield. Would Mayfield beat out Tua in an open competition?

Tua wins this battle pretty easily. But, Mayfield does have a playoff win under his belt. Some might think that will be enough to get a look. Would Baker be okay with being a backup to Tua or will his ego get in the way? Fairly or unfairly Mayfield has been labeled as a bit of a negative energy guy in the locker room.
Final Thoughts!
Of the names mentioned here, I believe that Tua would beat them all in a fair camp competition. Garoppolo seems to be the one with the best chance to unseat Tua as the starter of the Dolphins.
In all likelihood as we post this on 01/22/2023, the Dolphins will bring in a quarterback with some experience to be QB2 in case Skylar Thompson is not ready for that spot. Think names in the Mike White kind of range. A veteran but possibly with a lower price tag than Teddy Bridgewater.
