Cam Smith a defensive back out from the University of South Carolina was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. Miami did not have a first-round so their first pick was in the 2nd round.
Cam Smith at Pick 51 of the 2023 NFL Draft
Cam Smith plays an impact position in today’s pass-happy NFL Dolphins GM Chris Grier said, “You can never have enough defensive backs.” Grier went on to say that he was shocked that Smith was still on the board at pick 51.
A lot of people were surprised that the Dolphins picked a defensive back with their top pick. Miami had already added Jalen Ramsey this offseason via a trade with the Rams. Miami also still has Xavien Howard of course so it seemed Miami was set at that position. Not to mention last year’s surprise in Kader Kahou as an undrafted free agent. Nick Needham is also set to return so not many people were projecting a DB to Miami.
Smith was just too talented of a player at an impact position for the Dolphins to resist. When you watch this guy play football, his competitiveness stands out. He plays with an aggressive ball-hawking style. Pro Football Focus stated this about him: “Smith gets his hands on passes more frequently than any other cornerback in this class. Of his 70 targets over the past two seasons, Smith broke up 15 of them and picked off four others. He’s an instinctive and versatile player.”
Like many, I was surprised by the pick of a defensive back by the Dolphins. But, the more I think about the selection of Cam Smith makes a lot of sense. This guy has a passion for the game that shows in the film as you watch him play. The Dolphins will be playing some of the top quarterbacks in the NFL this season. Not to mention within their own division.
I know social media went bonkers because Smith played with Grier’s son in college. So, they figured that is the only reason the Dolphins made this choice. Crazy stuff gets around quickly! Simply put, Smith will be impact player for the Dolphins at some point!
