Dolphins OTAs, Thirsty, Miami

Dolphins OTAs and Other Fins Notes

The Miami Dolphins OTAs are being held this week at the team’s training facility in Miami Gardens, Florida. OTAs stand for organized team activities.

Dolphins OTAs Notes

The orange practice jersey reward has returned for 2023. On Monday (05/22/2023), Jaylen Waddle was wearing it. Today (0/23/2023), Duke Riley was sporting it. The orange jersey is given to a player that the coaching staff feels like had a solid practice the day before.

The players seem to enjoy the reward as it also entails getting their favorite music played during practice. The Dolphins OTAs seem to be a good avenue for the players to build good chemistry. it is a more laid-back atmosphere than that of the start of training camp when the competition for jobs really heats up.

Andrew Van Ginkel

Andrew Van Ginkel’s name got passed around by the various Dolphins beat writers. It seems that Van Ginkel has gotten some repetitions as an inside linebacker. He has not played as an inside linebacker since his first year in college. Many, including myself, thought Van Ginkel might be lost for salary cap reasons in free agency. But, it seems that the Dolphins’ new defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, liked what he saw on film when watching Van Ginkel.

Fangio’s reaching out to him seemed to have played a factor in his decision to return to Miami. He had other teams interested in his services.

Dolphins OTAs Austin Jackson

Austin Jackson, the second of Miami’s three first-round picks of the 2020 NFL Draft must step up. The Dolphins declined to pick up his 5th-year option. Dolphins’ OTAs are a good way for veterans to get back into the feel of things. However, Jackson must feel the pressure to perform.

Jackson is well aware that the Dolphins have brought in veteran additions to the line in large part to Jackson’s lack of consistency. Isaiah Wynn and Cedric Ogbuehi have recently been added to the roster. The competition should be heated.

McDaniel Speaks on Tua & More

Mike McDaniel discussed the injury statuses of Brandon Jones and Nik Needham. He said he sees Jones and Needham on a daily basis. The coach said that both players are working diligently to get back from their injuries. There is no timetable for their return.

McDaniel was asked if Trill Williams was moved to safety. He said it is the offseason so they are trying to teach players other positions for versatility.

Tua Tagovailoa was brought up of course during the Dolphins OTAs press conference. It centered on Tagovailoa “controlling the controllable.”  McDaniel said that Tagovailoa is true to word in terms of doing whatever it takes to succeed and stay healthy. He brought up how Tagovailoa took up martial arts this off-season.
