Six Touchdown Passes

In the epic comeback win on Sunday (09/18/2022) over the Baltimore Ravens, Tua Tagovailoa tossed six touchdown passes. So, where does that rank in Miami Dolphins history? It ties a club record for most touchdown passes in a single Dolphins game. Who does he tie with? He puts his name on the list with two hall of fame quarterbacks! Yes, Tagovailoa joins Bob Griese and Dan Marino in this rare single game accomplishment!

Tagovailoa’s Six Touchdown Game

Tagovailoa’s six touchdown passes came in a flurry as the Miami Dolphins overcame a 35 to 14 deficient in the 4th quarter against the Ravens. His first scoring toss was a 6 yarder to Jaylen Waddle which made the score 7 to 7. Then, on his next TD pass he threw a great pass that could only be caught by Mike Gesicki which was good for 14 yards. Which, made the score Ravens 28 and Dolphins 14. The pace would pick up in the 4th quarter!

Tagovailoa’s third TD pass was a 2 yard strike to Ryan Cracraft which made the 35-21 in favor of the Ravens. His 4th and 5th touchdown passes were both to Tyreek Hill for big gains! The fourth one for 48 yards which bought Miami to within 7 points of the Ravens. While the 5th scoring pass, was a 60 yarder that tied the game at 35.  The Ravens would add a field goal to go ahead 38-35 late in the 4th quarter, but Tagovailoa was not done.

Tagovailoa hit Waddle with the game winning TD pass with 14 seconds to play in the game. The final TD pass which made the 6 touchdown passes a reality was good for 7 yards. The Dolphins won the game by a score of 42-38.

Marino’s 6 Touchdown Passes Came in a Losing Effort

Marino threw 6 TD passes on 09/21/1986 for the Miami Dolphins. But, Miami still managed to lose to the New York Jets in overtime by a score of 51 to 45.  It was a road game for Miami.

Marino’s 6 touchdown passes:

  1. James Pruitt    6 yards
  2. Dan Johnson   1 yard
  3. Mark Duper    13 yards
  4. Mark Duper    46 yards
  5. Bruce Hardy      1 yard
  6. Mark Clayton    4 yards

I was about 16 years old while watching this game unfold. I remember this one stung! A great offensive shootout, but in my mind the good guys lost.

Bob Griese’s Six Touchdown Passes on Turkey Day!

Bob Griese had six touchdown passes as the Miami Dolphins traveled to Saint Louis to play the Cardinals on Thanksgiving Day in 1977. The game was played on 11/24/1977. Griese’s great performance led to a 55 to 14 smashing of the Cardinals.

Griese’s 6 touchdown passes:

  1. Nat Moore         4 yards
  2. Duriel Harris     7 yards
  3. Nat Moore         9 yards
  4. Nat Moore        28 yards
  5. Gary Davis        17 yards
  6. Andre Tillman  37 yards

I was young when this one happened, so I do not remember much of it. But, I have heard the stories about this Thanksgiving Day beatdown.
