2023 NFL Draft: John Michael Schmitz, Minnesota, Center

John Michael Schmitz, Minnesota, 2023 NFL Draft

Grading scale: 1 Poor 10 Elite      COD: Change of direction

Caballero says that John Michael Schmitz is a center prospect from Minnesota that passes the “eye test.” This Minnesota Golden Gophers center popped out to Caballero last year while he was scouting prospects. Schmitz is built to play on Sundays.

Caballero likes how this prospect uses his hips for a change of direction (COD). Flips his hips like a smaller guard but keeps a good balance upon contact. Schmitz is powerful but it is raw strength. Hands are strong and violent at the point of attack. He stays locked into his technique while he scrapes down the line of scrimmage (LOS).

A good technician with a natural knee bend that allows him to maintain a low pad level. This helps him gain leverage on the opposition. Use leverage in the run game better than in pass protection but still decent in pass protection. A high football IQ to go along with a motor that does not stop. Caballero says that watching the game film on Schmitz was fun.

The Prospect Sheet

Originally committed to Western Michigan before de-committing and accepting the offer from Minnesota. Schmitz also had offers from Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Central Michigan, and others.

Started all games in 2021 and 2022. Was an AP First Team All-America in 2022. Participated in the Senior Bowl recently. Many scouts say the Senior Bowl helped him raise his draft stock.

Draft Projection: 2nd round. Could slide into the late 1st round.

Overall: Caballero feels that Schmitz has a really good chance to be a long-time player in the NFL.
